Phone GPS vs External GPS Module

Here is a comparison between the phone's GPS (yellow) and a Dual XGPS160 external module (cyan) on the same session and lap.

Phones commonly have a 1Hz (once a second) update rate and use a low cost GPS chipset which results in long gaps between updates and poor accuracy at high speeds; not unexpected since they are designed for navigation.  External GPS modules range from 4Hz to 20Hz update rates and are very accurate at high speeds.

Notice that the lap times are comparable so if position accuracy is not a priority, the phone's GPS is sufficient for accurate lap times.
